PDF Troubleshooting

Solve PDF password, corruption, page, memory, signature and conversion-fidelity problems.

Updated August 31, 2026

If a PDF cannot be processed, check whether it is password-protected, damaged, restricted, unusually large, or dependent on advanced features that a browser tool cannot preserve.

Passwords and restrictions

  • A PDF can require a password to open.
  • An owner password can restrict copying, page assembly, extraction, or modification.
  • Use Unlock PDF only when you are authorized and know the required password.
  • An incorrect password or unsupported encryption can prevent processing.

Scanned PDFs

A scanned PDF contains page images rather than selectable text. PDF to Word cannot extract text that is not present. Render or extract the page image, then use Image to Text for OCR where appropriate.

Signatures and advanced features

Editing, deleting, reordering, rotating, stamping, compressing or rebuilding pages can invalidate digital signatures. Forms, bookmarks, links, annotations, layers, accessibility tags and scripts may also change or disappear. Keep the original and verify the downloaded copy.

Large or complex documents

PDF files can be compact on disk but expand into large page canvases. Page dimensions, image resolution, total pages and output settings can reach browser limits before the file reaches its displayed byte limit.

What to do

  1. Confirm the PDF opens in a trusted reader.
  2. Save an unprotected copy if you have permission.
  3. Split a long PDF and process smaller sections.
  4. Lower render quality or resolution where the tool offers it.
  5. Keep the original and inspect text, pages, forms and signatures after processing.
